What is The Four Wounds?
The Four Wounds is a four-soundtrack audio suite from Centerpointe Research Institute, the company behind Holosync meditation audio. It is designed to help you meet and work with four of the most universal emotional wounds a person can carry — shame, fear, anger, and abandonment — using precisely engineered sound rather than talk or medication. The suite was designed by Marc Gilson, drawing on decades of experience helping people work with exactly these wounds.
Centerpointe’s premise is that these wounds tend to live in the nervous system and the body, often below conscious awareness, rather than at the level of thought — which is why thinking or talking about them alone does not always reach them. The Four Wounds is offered as a tool for supporting the nervous system in that deeper emotional work. It is not a cure, not a magic bullet, and not a substitute for professional care.
How brainwave entrainment works
Brainwave entrainment relies on the frequency-following response: when the brain is exposed to a steady rhythmic stimulus, its own electrical activity tends to drift toward and synchronize with that rhythm. Holosync uses binaural beats to create the effect. A slightly different tone is delivered to each ear, and the brain perceives the difference between them as a single pulsing beat at a target frequency it can gently settle into.
Because the effect depends on each ear receiving its own separate tone, stereo headphones or earbuds are required. Played through a speaker, the two tones blend in the air before they reach you and the entrainment is lost, even though the music and ambient sound still play pleasantly. Guiding the brain through slower ranges — alpha, theta, and delta — is associated with the deeply relaxed, restorative states this kind of emotional work draws on.
What makes The Four Wounds different from regular binaural beats?
Search for emotional-healing audio and you will find an endless supply of free YouTube tracks, meditation apps, and ambient playlists advertising brainwave entrainment. Most are a single tone loop set to one frequency and left to run, offered as general-purpose calm.
The Four Wounds is built on a different premise: each wound has its own emotional shape, so each gets its own engineered brainwave journey. Rather than one frequency held flat, every track is a multi-stage trajectory designed for the specific dynamics of the wound it addresses. Shame settles the nervous system, then descends into deep theta and holds there, where the felt sense of unworthiness can soften. Fear descends all the way into deep delta so the body can finally release chronic vigilance. Anger rises to meet whatever activation is present, pauses to regulate, then settles into deep theta to let the anger move through. Abandonment does something unusual — it rises into low gamma to bring the wound fully into conscious awareness before descending into a warm, healing alpha hold. Each track is also anchored to its own carrier frequency, several drawn from the Solfeggio tone tradition, chosen to suit that particular wound.
That design sits on top of technology Centerpointe has engineered and refined since 1989 — more than 35 years of iterating Holosync against listener feedback and physiological response, rather than a preset dropped into an app. In practical terms, the difference is that you are not reaching for one generic “calm” track and hoping it fits; you are choosing the session built for the specific wound you are carrying that day.
The four wounds
Centerpointe frames these as the four wounds almost every person carries some version of, and notes that many familiar feelings trace back to them — guilt as a form of shame, chronic anxiety as a form of fear, long-held resentment as anger, loneliness as the echo of abandonment. The suite is not a diagnosis or a treatment for any clinical condition; it is a way of working with emotional material at the level of the nervous system.
Shame is met with safety and a return to worthiness. Fear is met with felt safety, so a nervous system stuck on watch can rest. Anger is met as a signal to be honored rather than suppressed, and given room to move. Abandonment is met with acceptance and the felt sense of belonging. Because deep emotional wounds take time, the suite is designed for consistent use over weeks and months, not a single dramatic session — and results vary from person to person.
The four soundtracks
Each track is a 30-minute session with a strong neural-driving effect, and each includes Lateral Carrier Boost 2.0 and silent Autofonix affirmations. All require stereo headphones or earbuds. Because the suite is meant to be used flexibly, there is no required order — work with the wound that feels most present, or rotate through all four.
Shame — Reclaim Your Worthiness. The session opens in low beta (12 Hz), then descends over about seven minutes into deep theta (5.5 Hz) and holds there, where the deeper layers of shame are worked with. Anchored to a 196 Hz carrier. Autofonix affirmations focus on worthiness, self-compassion, and inherent value. Can be used any time of day, in a private space with no time pressure afterward.
Fear — Rest in Felt Safety. The session opens in low beta (14 Hz), then descends over about nine minutes through alpha and theta into a very deep delta state (0.5 Hz), holding there so the body can release long-held vigilance. Anchored to a 396 Hz carrier, a Solfeggio tone traditionally associated with releasing fear and grounding. Autofonix affirmations focus on safety, grounding, and presence. Because it descends so deep, it works well as an evening or pre-sleep session, and some listeners fall asleep during it.
Anger — Step Into Sovereignty. The session opens in low beta (14 Hz), descends to alpha (10 Hz) with a five-minute hold to let the nervous system regulate, then settles over about ten minutes into deep theta (4.5 Hz), where held anger can be met and released. Anchored to a 244 Hz carrier associated with clarity, peace, and grounding. Autofonix affirmations focus on healthy boundaries, safe expression, and empowerment. Its activating opening makes morning or midday sessions more comfortable for many listeners.
Abandonment — Come Home to Acceptance. The session begins in low beta (12 Hz), rises over about seven minutes into low gamma (30 Hz) — an unusually clarifying state that brings the wound into conscious awareness — then descends over about twelve minutes into a warm alpha hold (9 Hz). Anchored to a 528 Hz carrier, sometimes called the “miracle frequency” for its association with healing. Autofonix affirmations focus on belonging, being held, and secure connection. A lighter, uplifting track that many find especially resonant in the evening.
The technologies inside The Four Wounds
Holosync is Centerpointe’s binaural-beat entrainment technology, refined since 1989. It guides the brain into each track’s target states and is present on all four soundtracks.
Lateral Carrier Boost 2.0 subtly boosts the amplitude of the Holosync carrier frequency in each channel to increase synchronized activity between the two hemispheres, for more whole-brain coherence and a deeper experience. In this suite it is included on all four tracks and activates during each track’s deepest, most therapeutic hold.
Autofonix is Centerpointe’s proprietary encoding that renders affirmations effectively silent to the conscious mind while remaining perceptible to the subconscious. Every track carries an Autofonix affirmation set written for its specific wound, and a full written transcript of the affirmations is included.
How to use it
The Four Wounds is meant to be used flexibly, matched to what you are carrying rather than as a fixed program. You may be drawn to one track for weeks, or rotate through all four; both work. Consistency matters more than frequency — even a few sessions a week produce deeper results than occasional, irregular listening. Listen seated or lying down, eyes closed, in a quiet, private space where you will not need to jump straight back into demanding activity.
Give yourself a few minutes after each session before returning to daily life, as insights and emotional shifts often continue to surface afterward; the included journal pages are designed for exactly that. Do not judge a session by how it feels in the moment — some feel deep or cathartic, others quiet, and both are doing their work. If strong emotion comes up, that is a normal part of the process; if a session ever feels like more than you can hold, it is always appropriate to pause, ground yourself, and return to it another time. Keep the volume comfortably low, and never listen while driving or doing anything that needs your full attention.
Who this is for, and important cautions
The Four Wounds is for adults who want a tool that reaches emotional material at the level of the nervous system — whether you have done years of inner work and still feel something unreached, or are just beginning and want to start somewhere that goes deep enough to matter. It suits people comfortable working with significant emotional territory in a private, self-directed way.
This suite is not a substitute for professional medical or mental-health care, and it is not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure any condition. If you are working with significant trauma or an active mental-health condition, Centerpointe recommends using it alongside professional support, and consulting your doctor or therapist first. Because the material can be intense, it is not recommended for children under 13. If you are in crisis or need immediate help, contact a licensed professional or, in the US, call or text 988.
